The exact same fundraiser can bring in very different amounts depending on the week you run it. Same product, same prizes, same effort, but pick a good window and more families take part, which means more money in the account when it's over.
Here's how I help schools pick their dates.
- Right after a break, while energy is highThe first couple of weeks back from summer or winter break are gold. Families are re-engaged, the calendar is fresh, and the kids have plenty of steam. Launch while everyone's paying attention.
- Well clear of state testingThe weeks around testing are the worst time to ask a school for anything. Teachers are stretched, parents are focused elsewhere, and your fundraiser gets lost. Give it a wide berth.
- Fall is the big one, late winter is the runner-upMost schools see their strongest results in September and October, with a solid second window in late winter or early spring. A lot of schools run one of each, a fall sale and a spring one, and treat them as two separate paydays.
- Keep the selling window shortA fundraiser that drags on for a month loses momentum. Two weeks of focused push usually beats a long, slow campaign that everyone forgets about halfway through.
- Book your dates before the calendar fills upThe best weeks get claimed first, by the book fair, the carnival, the other committee. Get your fundraiser on the school calendar early so you pick your week instead of taking what's left.
Not sure which week is yours?
I'm James, and I help schools around Dallas and Collin County line up their fundraiser dates every year. I know the district calendars, the testing weeks, and which windows tend to work for schools like the ones I serve.
